Statistics and Probability

Statistics and Probability is a course subject in the IUP’s Civil Engineering. It is a 2 credit compulsory subject. The subject covers the following topics.

Week- Subject Description
1 Statistical measures. Central tendency. Variability. Measure of individual in a population.
2 Data, samples, and population Understanding on data, samples, and population. Presentation of data in tables and charts. Exercise #1.
3 Probability (1). Basics of probability. Interpretation of probability.
4 Proabability (2). Conditional probability. Total probability. Bayes theorem. Exercise #2.
5 Random variables. Understanding on random variables, pdf, and cdf. Random variables. Bivariate random variables.
6 Probability distribution (1). Hypergeometric distribution. Binomial distribution. Poisson distribution. Geometric distribution. Negative binomial distribution. Exercise #3.
7 Probability distribution (2). Uniform distribution. Normal distribution. t distribution. Chi-square distribution. F distribution. Exercise #4.
8 Midterm exam.
9 Statistical inferences, confidence intervals (1). Introduction to statistical inferences in engineering. Estimate of statistical parameters, single estimate, confidence intervals. Confidence interval on mean of standard distribution.  Statistical tables. Exercises 1.
10 Statistical inferences, confidence intervals (2). Confidence interval on variance of normal distribution. Margin of error. Confidence interval on two samples.
11 Statistical inferences, hypothesis testing (1). Introduction to hypothesis testings. Hypothesis testing on mean of normal distribution. Single and double sided hypothesis tests. Exercise 2.
12 Statistical inferences, hypothesis testing (2). Hypothesis on mean of two normal distributions. Hypothesis on variance of normal distribution. Hypothesis test vs confidence interval.
13 Regression. Introduction to regression. Linear regression. Linear regression of two variables. Polynomial regression. Multivariable regression. Exercise 3.
14 Correlation. Introduction to correlation. Correlation coefficient. Exercise 4.
15 Case studies. Review, case study.
16 Exam.
